Hellhounds are slayer beasts who are relatively simple to kill and they don’t even hit that high. You can use overhead prayer to negate their attacks. Hellhounds can be killed only on a Slayer assignment, and you can get them assigned through slayer masters Duradel, Nieve, Steve, Chaeldar, Konar, Vannaka, and Krystilia.

If you have a high enough combat level, you can also consider approaching the Cerberus boss as killing counts towards the hellhound slayer assignment. Anyhow, in the following guide, we’ll be talking about where they’re located, how you can fight them, and what are their valuable drops.

Location

Hellhounds are of combat level 122, 127, and 136 with a max hit of 11 or 13. You can get about 116 to 150 XP per kill depending on their level. You need at least level 75 Slayer to approach them. The hellhounds are located in many locations.

Some of these locations include the Stronghold Slayer Cave, Taverley Dungeon, Witchaven Dungeon, God Wars Dungeon, Catacombs of Kourend, and Karuulm Slayer Dungeon. The quickest accessible place is the Stronghold Slayer Cave located in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. It’s where Slayer Masters Nieve and Steve are located.

How to fight them?

Hellhounds only attack through the melee. So, by using the protect from melee prayer, you can completely turn off dealing damage from them (if you have high defense). There are several safe spots in locations like the Taverley Dungeon, Karuulm Slayer Dungeon, and Stronghold Slayer Cave.

We recommend bringing a Dwarf Multi-Cannon if you’re on a slayer assignment as it increases your XP and Kills rates per hour. The best location to set up a cannon would be in the Stronghold Slayer Cave.

Gear

You can fight Hellhounds in any combat style you prefer. If you’re at a low combat level, you can choose to safe spot them; however, we recommend using melee head-on if your combat level is high. Since they’re weak to Magic, you need to set up your gear accordingly.

Drops

Besides regular bones, they have a chance of dropping Clue Scrolls (Hard). Not all drops might be worth your time but there is some mentioning. Also, the drop table changes depending on their location and the slayer master who assigned them.

The two valuable drops are Smoldering Stone and Clue Scroll (Hard). Slayer master exclusive drops include Brimstone Key, Larran’s Key, and Slayer’s Enchantment. Catacombs of Kourend exclusive drops include Ancient Shard, Dark Totem Base, Middle, and Top.
